Do you enjoy the process when you're working on a project? Here's what I learned organizing a virtual event in 4 weeks and tips for making any project less like work and more like an adventure.

When you’re working on a project, do you stress about getting things done and just knock it out? Or do you put thought into your work, pay attention to details, and enjoy getting there?

There are times when I just need to get things done. When I worked in the news business, it was all about meeting the deadlines.

But I’ve learned to enjoy the process a lot more. I like to sketch things out, try different options, and look at things from different angles

Enjoying the process on a new project

I’ve been working on a project with my BFF and biz partner Melissa Hunter. It’s a virtual conference for video creators to help them create a business or income source that isn’t reliant on just YouTube earnings.

We’ve been having so much fun figuring things out. In the past few weeks, we’ve created branding, set up a sales funnel, ran Facebook ads and a social media campaign, and lined up more than 15 speakers. We’ve been bouncing ideas around, trying new things, and creating something that we think could really help people.

Refocus Recalibrate Restart

Shameless plug: Refocus Recalibrate Restart launches today (May 30). You can sign up at Refocusrestart.com. It’s free!

When things aren’t working, we reconsider what we’re doing and try something new. We’ve updated our copy, changed pricing, expanded from a two-day event  to a three-day mini challenge (watch the replays here) and a three-day larger challenge with some amazing speakers and even some bonus sessions the following week.

We’ve had a good number of people sign up so far, and hopefully we’ll get a great, active audience, and maybe even make a difference for some people. No matter what, this process has been so awesome, we’ve created something in just a few weeks, and I get to work with my best friend.

Enjoy the Process

Tips for enjoying the process

Here are some ways you can enjoy the process when you’re working on a project. This is how I approach big undertakings and much smaller tasks.

Start with your light bulb. Write down all the ideas, even the bad ones. Highlight the best ideas. Do some research and browse Pinterest. Find out if there’s a need for what you want to do out there in the world.

Put some pieces together. Create a mood board and an outline of how this thing is going to look or work. Be super detailed.

Give yourself homework. Break down the project into smaller task, no matter how small, and then put them on your calendar. Give yourself deadlines.

Take breaks. Reward yourself with funtivities and snacks. Don’t just scroll your social media.

Hit an obstacle? Do some research, find a tutorial, look for some more inspiration. Take a break or try another step and come back to this one. Just keep going.

Share your work. Hit up some friends or your clients and ask for feedback. Make sure the people you ask understand your purpose. You might get some awesome new ideas.

What’s your creative path like?

What excites you about your work? If you’re not enjoying the journey, what else can you do to make it more fun or interesting? I get that’s not always possible if you have difficult clients or a scary boss. Let me know in the comments what you do to make the process of any project more fun. And share and pin this post if you found it helpful.

Here’s a little something extra to inspire you! My friend Lily Hevesh is definitely someone who enjoys the process. She builds these amazing structures out of dominoes and then destroys them.
