1766 Magazine

I recently reconnected with a college friend at a reunion for The Daily Targum, the college newspaper at Rutgers University where we probably spent most of our time. Francine Tardo stepped up to take on the editor’s role for 1766, the Rutgers Alumni Association’s magazine, which had been on hiatus since they didn’t have a team to put it together.

So when Francine needed a designer, she reached out to me, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to stretch my design skills, learn more about magazine production, and even network with other Rutgers alums. (1766 is named for the year Rutgers was founded, BTW.)

The magazine’s design needed some updating. While I didn’t want to do a complete redesign for this issue, I wanted to create some consistency and give it a more modern look. I worked with the fonts and basic styles already used in the magazine.

There were so many things I had to work out including sourcing quotes for the production and getting the right format to the printer. We worked with a team of volunteer writers, as well as the alumni organization and university representatives. There was a lot of scrambling and making updates, but also some really great team work!

As the art director, I had a lot of fun with this issue. I got to just run with ideas, take the space and create. And I’m pretty excited about the results. Plus, it was fun to team up with Francine again and revisit my college days.

My favorite spread is this look back at WRSU, the campus radio station.
