Get help with your designs by asking the right people for feedback. Here are some tips on who and what you should ask to make your work more awesome.

When you need help with your designs, do you post three or four variations to a Facebook group and ask members which option they prefer? I know I see this a lot.

There are probably so many people you can ask: your friends, your spouse, your mom. Here’s the thing. You’re probably not getting the right kind of feedback you need to make your work really awesome and take it to the next level to really get you noticed.

While most people comment that they like A or B, what you might need to hear is something a little more helpful and honest, along with tips on how to make it even more awesome.

  • I like A, but I like the fonts on B. You can mix and match the pieces!
  • Here’s a tutorial on how you get the text to align. I think that would really make your copy pop.
  • Have you looked for images on Creative Market? You might find something that’s not too expensive that would be a better option.

When you’ve created your branding (which encompasses your logo, fonts, color scheme, and all the visuals you’re going to be using in your business), here’s who you should ask and what to ask to get specific and meaningful help with your designs.

Reach out to your ideal customer

While your friends and fellow entrepreneurs might have an opinion, they’re not necessarily the people you’re going to get your best responses from.

Your ideal customer is the person who really matters. What about this visual is going to make them connect to you?

How do the colors make her feel? What’s catching her eye?

Would she buy from your business or sign up for your online course based on this branding?

Provide context: What’s your brand story?

If you’re going to share your designs in a group, let people know what your business is, who you hope to serve, and how the design fits your business personality.

Get help with your designs: Veggies

For example: I’m creating recipes to help parents get their kids to eat vegetables and teach kids how to prepare and cook them. My main color is yellow because it’s friendly and reminds me of sunshine. I want my site to appeal to families so I really like these playful vegetable images.

Ask a pro: Get some insight from graphic designers

Graphic designers are going to look at things with a critical eye. They can help you with design concepts if this is not your thing, point you in the right direction, or share resources. You might even get some to post a helpful comment when you share that design in a Facebook group and you can follow up with them in a message. Not all designers are going to give you free advice. Some charge a lot for their services.

Find creators on Instagram or at sites like Creative Market or Etsy to find some inspiration. They’ve already tested out what works. Look for ideas you can use – but not steal – in your projects.

And don’t forget, I’m here to help you. You can join my Facebook group Level Up Your Designs to hangout with creatives and bounce ideas off people.

Be open to ideas

Be prepared to get reactions you might not like and maybe go back to the drawing board. Branding takes work. You put a lot of work into your business, and this deserves that effort, too. You want to look your best. Your clients will help you find that right style that reflects you but also draws them in!
