Sometimes I wish creativity came in a box. But it doesn’t bottle or from a magic spell. Creativity is a state of mind. It’s a way of being. It’s a belief in yourself. That, my friend, is where your creative design powers live.
In this age of multitasking and all-in-one services, you might need to create graphics or write blog posts, and it might be something you never studied or trained for.
You find some tutorials online and make it up as you go along. (Seriously, I’ve made a living like this!) You find free fonts and programs like Canva. You put some things together and wonder: Does this look OK? You can spend hours on it. It can be so frustrating, right?
Now there are so many resources to help you learn how to create things in Canva or Photoshop. You can also learn some things about design aesthetics, like what exactly is white space? But there is a lot of information out there, and it can be overwhelming and seem like it’s over your head.
Here’s why you need to level up your creative design powers
If you’re working on your own in your business or for clients, creating visual projects can be challenging. You’re trying to make things look good and possibly catering to someone else’s vision. Your client might not know how to express what they want or why they don’t like something. You don’t have time to learn all the things.
Your graphics and branding make up your business or client’s visual personality. It is what draws people in, and you need to stand out. There’s a difference between looking homemade or looking polished.

You don’t need a degree to be a graphic designer. In college, I majored in history. I never took an art class, but I started to pick up design skills while I worked at the student newspaper. I enjoyed crafts as a kid, but didn’t really draw.
So if you don’t think you have the chops, you my friend are mistaken. You can learn. You can share your work. You can grow as a designer, level up your skills, and fill up that tool box and your portfolio with really amazing projects.
You may not realize it, but you’re already super creative. You have it in you and you just need some help learning how to channel that creativity into your work.
